"Digging out a splinter", a poem by Rebecca Bowman

digging out a splinter
to find that it has shattered
that it pervades my being
memories of glances, remarks
absences I didn’t notice
the overall tone of my childhood
even as my mother said her rosary
and loved loved loved
the air was thick with it
like LA smog
I breathed it in
to dismantle it means
dismantling my entire self
to rebuild me so much work
exhausted, frightened, culpable
still it must be done

A poem for this time

After two weeks cooped-up inside
I have to admit I missed
some of the people I hate the most.
The rest of you
I wouldn’t care less
if I ever saw you again.
Don’t fret. We will survive
in spite of all.

Un romance tradicional muy conocido

Romance del prisionero

Que por mayo era, por mayo,
cuando hace la calor,
cuando los trigos encañan
y están los campos en flor,
cuando canta la calandria
y responde el ruiseñor,
cuando los enamorados
van a servir al amor;
sino yo, triste, cuitado,
que vivo en esta prisión;
que ni sé cuándo es de día
ni cuándo las noches son,
sino por una avecilla
que me cantaba el albor.
Matómela un ballestero;
dele Dios mal galardón.

By May it was, by May
when it is already hot,
when the wheat is growing
and the fields are in bloom,
when the lark sings
and the nightingale retorts,
when lovers answer
to the call of love;
but I, troubled and sad,
I am living in this prison
and cannot tell when it is day
and when the night falls
but for a little bird
I heard singing every morn.
A crossbowman has killed it:
may he be punished by god.

"Romance de barco y junco", poema de Oscar Castro

El junco de la rivera
y el doble junco del agua,
en el país de un estanque
donde el día se mojaba,
donde volaban, inversas,
palomas de inversas alas.

El junco batido al viento
-estrella de seda y plata-
le daba la espalda al cielo
y hacia el cielo se curvaba,
como un dibujo salido
de un biombo de puertas claras.

El estanque era un océano
para mi barco pirata:
mi barco que por las tardes
en un lucero se anclaba,
mi barco de niño pobre
que me trajeron por pascua
y que hoy surca este romance
con velas anaranjadas.

Estrella de marineros,
en junco al barco guiaba.
El viento azul que venía
dolorido de fragancias,
besaba de lejanías
mis manos y mis pestañas
y era caricia redonda
sobre las velas combadas.

Al río del pueblo, un día,
llevé mi barco pirata.
lo dejé anclado en la orilla
para hacerle una ensenada;
mas lo llamó la corriente
con su telégrafo de aguas
y huyó pintando la tarde
de letras anaranjadas.

Dos lágrimas me trizaron
las pupilas desoladas.
en la cubierta del barco
se fue, llorando, mi infancia.

An Afternoon Poem by Carlos X. Ardavín

Tardes estivales

Si el mar estuviera cerca
me hundiría sin pensar en sus aguas.
Pero aquí solo hay tierra
y calor y escarabajos amarillos.

Por la ventana se escurre el sol
--agresivo, omnipresente—
y la lluvia es ya un lejano recuerdo
--como en los poemas--.

Su ausencia me entristece;
Yo, que tanto amo
El leve discurrir del agua en los cristales.

                    ***

Summer Afternoon

If the ocean were near
I would plunge in it without thinking.
But here there is nothing but earth,
heat, and yellow scarabs.

The sun seeps through the window
--omnipresent, aggressive--
and the rain is a distant memory
--like in the poems--.

I am saddened by its absence;
I, who loves so much
the subtle rumbling
of water on the window-panes.

Another poem by Rebecca Bowman

Just enough frost
to pale the meadow
just enough cold
to make me chill
then your warmth
turns ice to mist
still I’m left
bereft
of all certainty

Sólo la escarcha suficiente
para blanquear el prado
Sólo el frío suficiente
para darme escalofrío
tu calor entonces
vuelve niebla al hielo
Aun así me quedo
desprovista
de toda certidumbre

"The Cat", Guillaume Apollinaire

Le chat
Je souhaite dans ma maison:
Une femme ayant sa raison,
Un chat passant parmi les livres,
Des amis en toute saison
Sans lesquels je ne peux pas vivre.

The Cat
I wish I had in my house:
a reasonable woman,
a cat walking among the books,
friends at all seasons
whom I cannot live without

El gato
Quisiera en mi casa tener:
Una mujer razonable,
Un gato pasando entre los libros,
Amigos todo el tiempo
No podría vivir sin éstos.
